Feis Competition
Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS A FEIS?

A Feis ("Fesh") is a local Irish dance competition. There are several offered in our area throughout the year. Schedules for upcoming competitions can be found at Feisworx or Quickfeis.

WHO CAN SIGN UP FOR A FEIS?

Any level of dancer is welcomed to sign up for a Feis. If it is your first time, you will register in the First Feis category for each dance. The Feis will have a syllabus that you can refer to when signing up for more information.

WHICH DANCES SHOULD I SIGN UP MY DANCER UP TO COMPETE IN?

You can ask your teacher(s) which dances you will be ready to compete in. It is always good to read the Feis syllabus to better understand which dances your dancer will qualify for. Other Healy parents can be great resources if you have questions about Feising!

WHAT SHOULD MY DANCER WEAR TO A FEIS?

Irish dance shoes, Irish dance (poodle) socks, provided costume and your wig with headband. Some Feises are “black and white” competitions which means you wear all black instead of your normal costume. Make sure to pin your competition number onto your dancer’s waist.

HOW EARLY SHOULD WE ARRIVE AT A FEIS?

It is always smart to arrive as early as possible so you can make sure your dancer is well prepared before stepping on stage. Schedule will be posted on feis website.

WHAT DO WE DO UPON ARRIVAL AT A FEIS?

When you arrive at a Feis there will be a registration table where you can check your dancer in. The volunteers will hand you your competitor number and a competition list. On the back side of your competitor number there will be a list of the competitions your dancer is registered for.

HOW DO I KNOW WHERE/WHEN MY DANCER IS PERFORMING?

You can find where your competitions are listed under each stage on the competition list sheet. Each stage will also have a list of competitions next to it. When your competition is only a few numbers away, you should stay close to the stage so you don't miss your turn to dance.  The Feis will not wait for stragglers.

WHO CAN WE ASK FOR HELP WHEN AT A FEIS?

Feis volunteers are usually very friendly and willing to help. Remember they are also very busy and likely stretched thin so please be patient. Other parents are always a good resource as well. Your dancer can ask their classmates for help with their dances.

WHAT SHOULD WE BRING TO A FEIS?

Feises can be all-day affairs, so it’s smart to bring refreshments and snacks. Some Feises also allow you to “camp” so it’s wise to bring a blanket and some folding/bag chairs to create a place to hang out in between dances.

WHERE/WHEN DO WE GET RESULTS?

There is a results board where rankings will be posted after the competition has finished. It usually takes at least 30 minutes for results to be computed and then posted. If your dancer's number appears on the results ranking, you can claim your medal, ribbon or trophy from the awards table which is normally located near the results board.
